Detroit Socialist Party to Host Monthly Free Movie Nights at the Painted Lady Lounge in Hamtramck
Beginning January 17th, the Detroit Socialist Party will be hosting free Sunday night film screenings each month at the Painted Lady Lounge in Hamtramck.

The Painted Lady Lounge is located at: 2930 Jacob St. Hamtramck, MI. 48212. A map and driving directions can be found here. Admission to the DSP movie nights is free, however, there is an 18+ age-limit due to the bar location.

Vote No on Obama-care! Healthcare is Our Human Right!
Adopted by the Socialist Party USA National Action Committee


While citizens in most other industrialized nations enjoyed the benefits of publicly administered healthcare from the aftermath of WW II forward, Americans have suffered under a healthcare system dominated by private corporations. For-profit healthcare has produced negative health outcomes at all levels of the system. More than 48 million people have no health insurance, 30 million more are underinsured and 6 out of 10 Americans report that they have either delayed or deferred a necessary medical procedure in the last year. Americans are more than ready for publicly-run healthcare that guarantees access at all levels of the system.

Unfortunately, the bill recently passed by the House of Representatives, The Affordable Healthcare for America Act (HR 3962), and the proposals being considered by the Senate will not provide the relief Americans so desperately need. Instead, these reforms were shaped and, in some cases, authored by the very same private interests who have spent decades collecting massive profits by restricting access to care. As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama sensed the growing public anger about healthcare and scored many popularity points for promising “universal healthcare coverage.” Once in office, after taking millions from the healthcare lobby, his rhetoric shifted to the neoliberal promise of “choice and competition” in healthcare...

Socialist Party of Michigan (Re-Scheduled) 2009 State Convention - Sat. November 7th @ the Leland Hotel in Detroit

Following the SPMI state membership meeting vote to postpone this year’s State Convention from its originally scheduled date of Saturday August 8th, the re-scheduled 2009 State Convention of the Socialist Party of Michigan will be held Saturday November 7th in the main lobby of the Leland Hotel in Detroit. The State Convention is the highest ranking body of the Socialist Party of Michigan and is empowered to amend the SPMI State By-Laws and State Platform, adopt, amend, or repeal State Convention resolutions, and elect the SPMI State Executive Committee. Attendance at this year's State Convention is free and open to the public and anyone interested is encouraged to attend.

The State Convention will begin at 10AM and last until 6PM. The Leland Hotel is located at: 400 Bagley St. Detroit, MI 48226. It is the large twenty-story building located directly at the intersection of Cass Ave. and Bagley St. Parking is available for $3.00 in the Leland Hotel parking lot adjacent to the building on Bagley St., as well as at meter spaces on surrounding streets. The full State Convention will be held at the chairs and couches in the main lobby located directly up the stairway from the main front entrance of the building...

Detroit Socialist Party Re-Chartered
Following nearly a half decade since Detroit last had an organized Socialist Party local, the Socialist Party of Michigan has re-chartered the Detroit Socialist Party, with jurisdiction covering the entirety of Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties.

The Detroit Socialist Party carries a long and pronounced history that largely overlaps with that of the formative years of the Detroit and U.S. industrial labor movement. In its early history, the Detroit Socialist Party had as many as sixteen separate branches, ran candidates for nearly every elected city post, and operated numerous local offices and meeting halls, including the still-standing "House of the Masses," at Gratiot and Saint Aubin...
